CS2 Case Opening Guide
CS2 cases are one of the most iconic parts of Counter-Strike 2 — and one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains exactly how CS2 loot boxes work, what the real odds are, and what your options are if you want to open cases smarter.
What Are CS2 Cases?
CS2 cases (also called loot boxes or crates) are in-game containers that hold randomised cosmetic weapon skins, gloves, and stickers. They were introduced in August 2013 with the Arms Deal update and have become a cornerstone of Counter-Strike's economy. Today Valve has released over 60 official cases, ranging from the classic CS:GO Weapon Case to the modern Kilowatt Case.
Cases themselves drop for free during matches (limited weekly drops) or can be bought on the Steam Community Market. However, to actually open a case you need a matching Case Key, which costs approximately $2.49 USD and is purchased directly from the in-game store. The key is consumed on opening — you can never get it back.
CS2 Case Rarity Tiers & Drop Rates
Every item inside a CS2 case belongs to one of seven rarity tiers. Valve does not publish exact odds, but data from millions of community-tracked openings has produced the following widely accepted estimates:
Consumer Grade
~79.92% — White / Grey
Industrial Grade
~15.98% — Light Blue
Mil-Spec
~7.99% — Blue
Restricted
~3.20% — Purple
Classified
~1.28% — Pink
Covert
~0.51% — Red
Rare Special
~0.26% — Gold / Knives & Gloves
Each tier can also drop in a StatTrak™ variant (roughly 1-in-10 chance on top of the rarity roll), which tracks kill counts and typically multiplies the skin's market value by 2–5×.
How to Open a CS2 Case — Step by Step
- Acquire a case. Cases drop randomly after completing matches (up to a weekly limit) or can be purchased on the Steam Community Market, often for just a few cents.
- Buy the matching key. Each case series requires its own key — for example the Kilowatt Case Key for the Kilowatt Case. Keys cost $2.49 each in the Steam Store and are non-transferable after purchase.
- Open in-game. Go to your CS2 Inventory → select the case → click "Unlock Container" → pay the key → receive a random skin instantly.
- Check wear & float. Immediately after opening, inspect the skin to see its Float Value and wear tier (see section below).
What Affects CS2 Skin Value? Float, Wear & StatTrak
Two primary attributes determine a skin's appearance — and market price — beyond rarity:
Float Value
A number between 0.00 and 1.00 assigned at open time. Lower floats (closer to 0) mean less wear and a cleaner appearance. A Factory New AK-47 Asiimov might be worth 10× more than the same skin in Battle-Scarred condition.
Wear Tiers
CS2 defines five wear labels based on float ranges: Factory New (FN) 0.00–0.07, Minimal Wear (MW) 0.07–0.15, Field-Tested (FT) 0.15–0.38, Well-Worn (WW) 0.38–0.45, Battle-Scarred (BS) 0.45–1.00.
StatTrak™
StatTrak skins carry a kill counter displayed on the weapon. They drop at roughly 1-in-10 odds within any given rarity tier and are consistently valued higher on the Steam Market.
The Expected Value Problem
Here is the uncomfortable math: the average value of a skin from a typical CS2 case is significantly lower than $2.49 — the cost of the key alone, before the case itself. Community analysis across millions of openings consistently shows average returns of $0.30–$0.80 per opening for most modern cases — well below the combined cost of the key plus the case itself.
The huge variance (the remote chance of a $500+ knife or glove) is what keeps people opening. But statistically, the vast majority of CS2 case openings result in a net loss. Understanding this is the first step to spending smarter.
Want to Open Cases Without Buying Keys?
On DuckSkins you open cases with your balance — no $2.49 keys, no Steam restrictions. Each opening is provably fair, the odds are displayed up front, and winnings go straight to your inventory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open CS2 cases without a key?
Not in the official CS2 client — every Valve case requires its specific key. However, third-party case opening platforms like DuckSkins let you open themed cases using your site balance, completely bypassing Steam keys.
Are CS2 cases worth opening?
Purely mathematically, no — the average return is below the cost of the key for virtually every case. The appeal lies in the variance: the small chance of landing a rare, high-value skin. Understanding the expected value before you open is always the smart move.
What is the rarest item you can get from a CS2 case?
The rarest tier is the "Rare Special Item" — knives and gloves — at approximately 0.26% drop rate. Within that, getting a Factory New version of a high-demand knife (like a Karambit or Butterfly) in a StatTrak variant is exceptionally rare and can be worth several thousand dollars.
Do CS2 case drop rates change over time?
Valve has never officially changed the rarity percentages, though they have not officially confirmed them either. The figures cited in this guide are based on community tracking of millions of openings and are considered reliable estimates.
